Mindfulness Day

[based in a version published in 2013]

If you find yourself forgetting where you parked the car, or where you put the keys, then a small Mindfulness practice might help!
Mindfulness is not connected with any religious group or movement, it is identified with personal development and the quest for self-knowledge.
September 12th has been designated the day to discuss and to share ways of being mindful. The idea is that learning about mindfulness helps us to make it a...

Presence

Presence

Being present takes much longer to describe than to be.

In the time it can take to name all the sensations of a given moment, the moment is past and the sensations have changed. Being is very different from telling, or naming or saying.
Being present means being settled, and that is a difficult state for people raised in busyness and constant movement and stimulation.
We are not so much sitting on the seat watching television, as we are immersed in the neighbourhood of ...

Easy Path

Easy Path

Walter Savage Landor is remembered for saying “There is no easy path leading out of life, and few easy ones that lie within it.” As we move towards World Labyrinth Day, this is a point to ponder.

The first Saturday of May is always World Labyrinth Day, and this year that happens to be May First, overlapping with whatever merry-making this May Day can include.
May Day festivities are usually held on 1 May or the first Monday of May, and the current public health situation does no...

Mindful and Mellow

In 2011, September 12 was designated Mindfulness Day by Wisdom Publications. Now it is an annual event, and a variety of workshops and meditation groups are held around the world. The intent is to raise awareness among the general public about the value and benefit of mindfulness.

The word "mindfulness" is a translation of the term sati, which Buddhist teachings apply to the development of self-knowledge and wisdom on the path towards enlightenment and freedom fro...

Grasping Gratitude

Grasping Gratitude

Learning to maintain an attitude of gratitude is at the centre of many modern teachings, and Seekers are encouraged to be mindful about every day miracles and be grateful.
Giving thanks as an expression of faith is a familiar idea. Prayers, mantras and chants have been written to be said with meals, for the day we are starting or closing, and for other events which have kindled feelings of gratitude within us.
In the culture where I grew up gratitude was expected, ...

Don't Remember, Don't Forget

Don't Remember, Don't Forget

“Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally,” says Jon Kabat-Zinn, “It’s about knowing what is on your mind.”
In 1979, Jon Kabat-Zinn created an eight-week stress-reduction program which research has since proven to improve mental and physical health, greater well-being, and perceived health. His work is known as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.
     Mindfulness is both e...

Life is Like Ice Cream

Life is Like Ice Cream

The 1994 film Forrest Gump popularized the idea that ‘Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.'

[image shows the tray inside a box of chocolates, with twenty different candies covered in light, dark and white choclate]
It is an idea that balances the promise of  future delights with uncertainty. Whether we feel patience or anxiety about the prospect is within our control.
This week I heard an online lecture from Abraham Hic...

Mindfulness in All the Planes of Being

September 12 is Mindfulness Day. It is a day when pausing in the rush of life can be made a priority. If you have a regular practice this is a special day; if the idea is new to you, rest assured it is simple and holds many benefits.
When learning Mindfulness, the method most easily successful is through paying attention to breathing. Finding the focus for mindful breathing may not always be obvious. The four planes of being, as illuminated in a ...

This Place Where I Am

This Place Where I Am

The fourteenth century mystic and poet, Hafiz, wrote: “This place where you are right now, God circled on a map for you.”

I have days when I resist what is happening in my life, and I believe that at one time or another we all are capable of wishing life was different. This line from Hafiz is a good reminder to pay attention.
The place, the situation and the circumstances of where we are in any given moment, is a part of the grand design of life. There is so...
