Quiet

Quiet

The Autumn Equinox is almost upon us. For me, the year seems to be galloping through its cycle very quickly.
It was at the time of the Spring Equinox in mid-March that I first moved to isolate myself. My intention was to avoid illness for myself, and to avoid becoming an unwitting viral vector, distributing ill-health to others.

I have always revelled in my time alone, and I was unconcerned by the prospect of a few weeks of Me Time. As the weeks and months have rolled by, I have become ac...

Solitude and Growth

Solitude and Growth

There is a quote that shows up on my FaceBook feed with some regularity. It is from Christine Caine and it says “Sometimes when you're in a dark place you think you've been buried, but you've actually been planted.”

We are into the fifth month of isolation and distancing. The virus is killing thousands of people around the globe, and infecting millions for whom life will never be the same.
For those of us with great privilege, this has been a time of withdrawal and qui...

New Light

New Light

As the Summer Solstice approaches, we who dwell in the Northern hemisphere are enjoying some of the longest days of the year.
We are getting ready, together and apart, to mark the day. For the first time, the sunset and sunrise and England’s Stonehenge in Salisbury Pain will be live-streamed around the globe. People who might never reasonably expect to see the sight in person will have the chance to join with thousands of others to be present and witness the moment.

Together Apart

I have been using this period of isolation to experiment with FaceBook Live as a way to do the work I am here to do.
It has been an interesting experience, as I try my best to outwit the unfamiliar vocabulary of the software involved, and figure out how to get the word out to people who might be interested in attending.
As well as drawing cards for the people in attendance, I have been receiving cards for the community as a whole, so that viewers of the video recording have a sp...

Yule

 Yule

In ancient Scandinavia the Feast of Juul was the twelve days after Winter Solstice, celebrating the rebirth of the sun.  Some histories record that the word juul or jol meant festive and jolly comes from the same root. Jol also moved into Old French as jolif and became joli meaning "pretty".
Yule is claimed to originate with the ancient word for Wheel, and applies to these days in the Northern year when the turning of the sun’s path through the sky seems to pause and turn.

This is a...

The Longest Day

The Longest Day

Here on the edge of Gatineau Park in Quebec, mid June is the time of the Summer Solstice: the longest day of the year.
In the village where I am located, the sun will rise at 5:15 Eastern time on Wednesday, June 21, 2017, and remain until a 20:55 sunset, offering 15 hours and 40 minutes of daylight.
This will remain constant for a few days, and on the 26th the day will dawn just one minute later, beginning the inevitable shortening of the days that take us towar...

Keep Moving
Yule
At the time of the December Solstice, a festival known as the Feast of Juul has been observed in Scandinavia for more than two thousand years. It is from Juul that we get the term 'Yule'  for this time of year in the northern world.
Traditional Juul celebrations included the lighting of fires to mirror the return of the light and warmth of the sun after the shortest night. A large log was brought to the hearth and set ablaze as a tribute the Norse god Thor. The ashes...

Resolve to Create a Vision for 2015

Resolve to Create a Vision for 2015

I believe that there is a cultural instinct related to Numerology which leads us to make resolutions for the New Year.  There is an unspoken acknowledgement that a new number-vibration will support us in new or changed behaviours.
Some people have great success: they follow through and succeed, moving closer to, or arriving at, their stated goal. Many others lose interest, forget, or thoroughly fail.
The difference may be in the vibrations of th...

Years and Cycles: Seven, Eleven and Ninety-nine

Years and Cycles: Seven, Eleven and Ninety-nine

Near the end of December I am particularly conscious that the physical plane is a place of cycles.
The wall calendar is augmented by a new one hanging underneath, and conversations turn to the theme of ‘where did the year go?’ and I connect again to the turning of the clock, the repetition of the seasons: long dark nights about to give way to extra slivers of sunlight as we cross that magical Solstice line.
     Like all cycles o...
